De La Soul Announces Cabin in the Sky: A Tribute, A Therapy Session, and a Victory Lap

De La Soul Announces Cabin in the Sky

And Yes, It Already Hurts in the Best Way Possible

Look — some artists “announce” albums, and some artists rearrange your emotional furniture. De La Soul has always been the latter, and Cabin in the Sky is shaping up to be the kind of record that doesn’t just play in the background — it sits down next to you and says, “Yeah, man. Life is heavy. But we keep going.”

This is the group’s first album since the heartbreaking loss of founding member David Jude “Trugoy” Jolicoeur, who left us in 2023. If you’ve ever shouted “stakes is high!” alone in your car at 2 a.m. (what, just us?), this one hits differently.

The 20-track album lands November 21 via Mass Appeal — and if the lead single “The Package” (produced by Pete Rock) is any indication, we’re getting vintage soul, real grief, and bars sharpened by memory and love — not ego.

And speaking of legends, the record also pulls in:

  • DJ Premier
  • Supa Dave
  • Pete Rock (again, blessed be)
  • Killer Mike
  • Common
  • Little Dragon’s Yukimi
  • Nas
  • Black Thought (because of course excellence attracts excellence)

In his press statement, Posdnuos put it like this:

“This album is therapy and celebration at the same time.”

Translation: this is music for people who have felt things, avoided feeling things, and finally gave in because the right song came on at the wrong time. (You know who you are.)

A key emotional anchor of the record is how much of Trugoy’s essence was intentionally kept intact — voice, production choices, even the little rhythmic ghosts in the mix. Pos made sure Dave isn’t just referenced — he’s felt. Like he’s still breathing in the room.

That’s love. That’s legacy. That’s hip-hop.
