Death Cab for Cutie Are Coming Back to Florida

Death Cab for Cutie Announce 2027 Tour

and Yes, We’re Ready to Feel Things

There are bands you casually listen to, and then there are bands that somehow know exactly where you keep all the emotional baggage. Death Cab for Cutie has spent decades rummaging through that particular closet, pulling out the stuff you thought you had buried and somehow turning it into a beautiful song.

I know I say this about a lot of bands, but I genuinely love Death Cab for Cutie. There aren’t many groups that can give you an eight-minute instrumental introduction and somehow make you think, “Don’t you dare touch that skip button.” Then comes “I Will Possess Your Heart,” and suddenly you’re somewhere completely different. It’s hypnotic, emotional and strangely comforting, which is a hell of a trick for a song that is basically the musical equivalent of staring out a rainy window while reconsidering every relationship you’ve ever had.

And that’s just one song.

Death Cab has built an entire catalog around that ability to make heartbreak sound beautiful without making you want to throw yourself dramatically onto a fainting couch. “Soul Meets Body,” “Crooked Teeth,” “I Will Follow You Into the Dark,” “What Sarah Said,” “Grapevine Fires,” “You Are a Tourist” and plenty of others have become permanent fixtures for people who have experienced love, loss, regret, nostalgia or simply Tuesday.

Now the band is taking its latest chapter, I Built You A Tower, back across North America in 2027, and Florida is getting a particularly good reason to pay attention.

Death Cab Is Coming to St. Augustine

The newly announced North American leg begins March 11 in Nashville before working its way through Knoxville, Atlanta, St. Augustine, Miami Beach, Orlando and a long list of cities before wrapping up in Asheville on April 16. Swapmeet will provide support throughout the mainland spring dates. The band has also scheduled a January 19 performance in Honolulu.

For those of us in Florida, the important date is March 17, 2027, when Death Cab for Cutie takes the stage at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre.

The Amp currently lists the show for 7 p.m., with doors at 6 p.m., and tickets are scheduled to go on sale September 25 following the artist presale.

And let me just say this publicly: Static Live would absolutely love the opportunity to become an authorized ticket sales affiliate for the St. Augustine Amphitheatre. The venue is one of the best live-music destinations anywhere in Northeast Florida, and having the ability to connect our audience directly with legitimate ticket opportunities for shows like this would be a natural fit for what we’re building. No shady “totally legitimate” tickets being sold from a guy named Steve on Facebook Marketplace. Actual tickets, actual shows, actual music.

I Built You A Tower Gives Death Cab Another Chapter

The tour supports I Built You A Tower, the band’s 11th studio album, which was released June 5. The record was produced and engineered by John Congleton and created during an unusually concentrated three-week recording period, with additional work taking place in the band members’ home studios.

The album’s first single, “Riptides,” has already given the band another milestone, becoming their ninth No. 1 at Adult Alternative radio. That’s an impressive achievement for a band that has been making music long enough for an entire generation of musicians to steal their emotional homework.

The new record also represents something of a return to Death Cab’s independent roots, while continuing the band’s long-running tradition of turning complicated human experiences into songs that somehow sound better than the actual experience felt.

Which is probably why so many of us keep coming back.

They Have the Résumé to Back It Up

Death Cab for Cutie have received multiple Grammy nominations throughout their career, including recognition for Plans, Narrow Stairs, Codes and Keys, Kintsugi and “I Will Possess Your Heart.”

They’ve also racked up an impressive collection of radio No. 1s. “Soul Meets Body” became their first No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Alternative chart, while “You Are a Tourist” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Songs and Adult Alternative charts. More recently, “Here to Forever,” “Pepper,” “Gold Rush” and “Northern Lights” have added to their run of Adult Alternative chart-toppers.

That’s the thing about Death Cab. Their success has never depended on one giant pop-culture moment. They’ve built something much more durable: a catalog people actually live with.

And Then There’s “Stone Over Water”

Along with the tour announcement, the band released a new video for “Stone Over Water,” created by musician and animator Sean Solomon.

Solomon’s animated treatment fits the song’s emotional territory beautifully, using a story about having a terrible day and ultimately finding a way through it. The idea is simple enough, but that’s often where Death Cab operates best. Life gets messy, people fall apart, things don’t work out, and somewhere inside all of that there’s still a reason to keep moving.

It’s basically the Death Cab philosophy: yes, everything hurts, but maybe keep walking anyway.

The band has also spent the last few years celebrating major anniversaries of Transatlanticism and Plans, giving longtime fans the chance to revisit some of the albums that helped define their career. Those records remain remarkably powerful because they don’t try to tell you how to feel. They just put the feeling on the table and let you sit with it.

St. Augustine, We’re Paying Attention

The March 17 St. Augustine show is particularly interesting for anyone along Florida’s northeast coast. It’s close enough for fans from Jacksonville, Daytona Beach, Ormond Beach, Palm Coast and the surrounding areas to make a night of it without requiring the sort of logistical planning normally reserved for international espionage.

And if you’ve never been to the St. Augustine Amphitheatre, this is a pretty good excuse to fix that.

Death Cab for Cutie, one of the most emotionally reliable bands ever created, playing one of Florida’s best-known outdoor music venues? That’s a combination that makes considerably more sense than most things humans have decided to put on concert calendars.

Find Death Cab and More Live Music With Static Live

This is exactly why we built the Static Live Music Calendar App. We want to make it easier for people to discover the bands they love, the bands they forgot they loved and the bands they haven’t heard yet but are about to become obsessed with.

Static Live currently covers live music throughout Florida’s East Coast, including Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach, Ormond Beach, Flagler Beach, St. Augustine and surrounding communities, with plans to expand into additional cities.

Because the worst thing about discovering your favorite band is finding out they played 20 minutes from your house last night.

Humanity has invented smartphones, satellites and artificial intelligence, yet somehow we still miss concerts because nobody told us they were happening.

We’re working on that.
