The music industry has a funny relationship with awards. Spend years writing songs, recording albums, touring until your body starts filing formal complaints, and trying to convince people that your music deserves a place in their lives. Then, one day, somebody hands you a trophy, and suddenly everyone wants to know whether you’re the future of music or yesterday’s news. Apparently, artistic achievement now requires a committee, a voting process and a shiny object to make it official.
Welcome to awards season, where the Grammys are beginning to sort through the contenders for their next ceremony, while the 2026 MAMA Awards are bringing some of the biggest names in Korean pop music into the spotlight.
There’s plenty to discuss, from the unusually crowded Grammy Best New Artist field to the return of K-pop superstars BIGBANG and BTS to the awards conversation. And, as always, there are a few eligibility decisions that prove the music business is considerably more complicated than simply releasing a great song and hoping somebody listens.
The Grammys: 331 Artists Enter the Best New Artist Race
Let’s start with the Grammy Awards, because the Recording Academy has some sorting to do.
According to Billboard’s October 12 report, 331 artists have been entered for consideration in the Best New Artist category for the 2027 Grammy Awards. That is the entry pool, not the final list of nominees. The distinction matters because being submitted for consideration is not the same thing as receiving a nomination, much less winning a Grammy. The Academy still has to determine eligibility and select the eventual nominees.
The Best New Artist category has always been a little complicated. Some artists genuinely emerge from nowhere and suddenly dominate the conversation, while others have spent years building careers before reaching a major commercial breakthrough. The Recording Academy’s rules account for that distinction, meaning a successful artist can still be ruled ineligible if the screening committee determines that their impact on the industry predates the eligibility period.
In other words, the category isn’t necessarily about who just learned how to play the game. It’s about who has reached a significant new level of recognition.
The Grammy Best New Artist Contenders Worth Watching
Billboard’s report identifies several familiar names among the 331 artists entered for consideration. The following is a selection of notable artists highlighted in reporting about the entry list, not a complete list of all 331 entries and not the final Grammy nominations.
Don Toliver is one of the more interesting names in the field. The rapper scored his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 with Octane in 2026, marking a major commercial milestone after a run of successful releases. He’s hardly an overnight success, but that breakthrough gives his Grammy campaign a compelling storyline.
Ella Langley also enters the conversation after building momentum in country music. Her eligibility is particularly notable because the Recording Academy expanded the number of times an artist can be submitted for Best New Artist consideration from three to four. That rule change allows her to remain in the running rather than being automatically excluded under the previous limit.
Sam Fender is another name to watch. Although he has been established in the British music scene for years, his collaboration with Olivia Dean on “Rein Me In” became his first Billboard Hot 100 hit. That new level of American chart recognition has helped bring him into this Grammy conversation.
Other artists highlighted in the entry-list reporting include:
- Sienna Spiro, who won Best New Artist at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards.
- Ken Carson, whose entry also benefits from the expanded submission limit.
- Geese, the rock band whose growing profile has made it one of the more intriguing names in the field.
- CMAT, the Irish singer-songwriter building an international audience.
- Yeat, the rapper whose commercially successful releases have made him a recognizable name in contemporary hip-hop.
- Role Model, whose alternative pop has developed a dedicated following.
- MUNA, the indie-pop band with an established fan base.
- Miles Caton, the singer and actor whose work has attracted attention beyond a single musical lane.
- The Beaches, the Canadian rock band continuing to expand its audience.
- Holly Humberstone, the British singer-songwriter known for emotionally direct alternative pop.
- Suki Waterhouse, whose music career has developed alongside her work as an actor and model.
- Remi Wolf, the singer-songwriter known for an eclectic mix of funk, pop and alternative sounds.
- Rod Wave, the rapper and singer with a strong commercial track record.
- Treaty Oak Revival, the Texas band combining country influences with rock.
- Alana Springsteen, the country singer-songwriter.
- Bossman Dlow, the rapper who has built momentum in contemporary hip-hop.
- Kashus Culpepper, the singer-songwriter whose sound draws on country, soul and Americana.
- Yung Miami, the rapper known for her work with City Girls.
- Fcukers, the New York electronic duo.
- October London, the singer whose work draws heavily on classic soul influences.
- Key Glock, the Memphis rapper.
- Magnus Ferrell, the singer-songwriter.
- Dexter and the Moonrocks, the alternative country-rock band.
- Moriah, the artist included in the reported entry pool.
That’s a broad field, covering everything from country and Americana to hip-hop, indie rock and experimental pop. Whether all those genres should be competing within a single category is another conversation, but the range certainly reflects how fragmented and diverse the modern music industry has become.
The Grammys Have Changed the Rules
One of the more important details this year is the Recording Academy’s decision to increase the maximum number of Best New Artist submissions from three to four. The change gives some artists another opportunity to be considered, including Langley, Carson and Geese.
The Academy has also introduced new categories for the 2027 ceremony, including Best Asian Pop Music Performance, Best Latin Song, Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance, Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance and Best Traditional Folk Album. Those additions expand the awards to recognize musical styles and collaborations that haven’t previously had dedicated categories.
It’s a useful reminder that the Grammys aren’t a static institution. Music changes, listening habits change, and the Academy occasionally has to update its rules to reflect what’s happening outside its voting rooms.
The actual Best New Artist nominees will be announced later. Until then, every name on the entry list remains a contender, not a confirmed nominee. The 69th Grammy Awards are scheduled for February 7, 2027.
Meanwhile, the 2026 MAMA Awards Are Bringing Out the K-Pop Heavyweights
While the Grammy field begins to take shape, the MAMA Awards have revealed their nominees for 2026, with BIGBANG and BTS among the most prominent names in the competition.
The MAMA Awards are one of the major annual events in Korean popular music, recognizing artists across group, solo, vocal, rap and genre-specific categories. This year’s nominees include established global stars alongside newer acts looking to establish themselves in an increasingly competitive K-pop landscape.
For anyone who still thinks K-pop is a niche interest, the genre’s global commercial footprint should have put that argument to bed several years ago. These artists sell out arenas, rack up enormous streaming numbers and command international fan communities capable of turning a single announcement into a worldwide event before most of us have finished our morning coffee.
BIGBANG and BTS Lead the Conversation
BIGBANG is among the biggest names in the 2026 MAMA nominations, appearing in the Best Male Group category alongside BTS, ATEEZ, CORTIS, ENHYPEN, NCT WISH, Stray Kids and TXT.
BIGBANG’s inclusion is significant because the group helped shape the development of modern K-pop and its international reach. BTS, meanwhile, has become one of the genre’s defining global acts, building a following that extends well beyond South Korea.
The competition is hardly limited to those two groups. The Best Female Group field includes aespa, BABYMONSTER, BLACKPINK, Hearts2Hearts, ILLIT, IVE, LE SSERAFIM and NMIXX. That’s a stacked category, with several groups already commanding substantial international audiences.
The 2026 MAMA Awards: Major Nominee Categories
Here’s a useful breakdown of several key categories announced for this year’s MAMA Awards.

The MAMA nominations also include track-specific recognition. The Best Vocal Performance Solo category includes Hwasa’s “Good Goodbye,” IU’s “Unknown Planet,” Jennie’s “Less Than a Lover,” Roy Kim’s “No Words Can Say” and WOODZ’s “CINEMA.” The group vocal category includes BTS’s “SWIM,” AKMU’s “Paradise of Rumors,” Davichi’s “TIME CAPSULE,” DxS’s “Blue” and MAMAMOO’s “4 Flowers.”
These categories demonstrate the range of music being recognized, from polished group productions to solo vocal performances and rap-focused work. The complete nominee list includes additional genre categories and fan-voted awards.
The Fans Get a Say, Too
Fan participation is a major part of the MAMA Awards, and the 2026 Fans’ Choice voting process is underway.
According to the published schedule, the first round of voting runs through October 22 at 11:59 p.m. Korean Standard Time. The 20 artists selected from the pre-vote in each of the male and female Fans’ Choice categories will advance to the second round, scheduled to run from October 28 through November 18.
The eligibility period for this year’s MAMA Awards covers music released between October 1, 2025, and September 30, 2026. That gives the awards a defined window for considering the releases that helped shape the past year in Korean music.
If you’ve ever watched a fan base mobilize around a favorite artist, you already know that fan voting can become a competitive sport of its own. The artists make the music, the fans make the noise, and the internet provides the arena. Everybody wins, except perhaps anyone who thought they were going to have a quiet evening.
Two Awards Shows, Two Different Snapshots of Music
The Grammy Best New Artist entry list and the MAMA nominations serve different purposes, but together they illustrate how many different paths artists can take toward recognition.
The Grammys are considering a wide range of artists for a category built around breakthrough impact, with eligibility rules designed to distinguish emerging stars from artists whose influence was established earlier. The MAMA Awards, meanwhile, recognize a broad spectrum of Korean music, from global superstars to rising acts competing for their first major award.
Both approaches have their quirks. Awards never tell the entire story of an artist’s career, and a trophy doesn’t automatically make a song better. Plenty of outstanding musicians have gone home empty-handed, while some award-winning tracks disappear from public memory faster than a disposable pop trend.
Still, these ceremonies matter because they introduce audiences to artists they may have missed, give musicians a moment of recognition and create a snapshot of the music industry at a particular point in time.
The most interesting part isn’t always who wins. Sometimes it’s discovering the name on the list that makes you stop scrolling and think, “Wait, how have I not heard this person yet?”
That’s where the fun begins.
