Michael Becomes First Biopic Ever to Surpass $1 Billion at the Global Box Office

Michael Jackson Biopic Michael Crosses Historic $1 Billion Box Office Milestone

Proving the King of Pop Still Rules the World

Some artists become famous.

Some become legends.

And then there’s Michael Jackson, a performer whose influence became so massive that it’s almost impossible to measure. Whether you grew up moonwalking across your living room carpet in the 1980s or discovered his music decades later through streaming playlists, one thing remains true: the King of Pop never really left the stage.

Now his story has reached another historic milestone.

The Michael Jackson biopic Michael has officially surpassed $1 billion at the global box office, becoming the first biographical film in cinema history to cross the billion-dollar mark. According to studio figures, the film has earned approximately $629.8 million internationally and $371.8 million domestically, cementing its place as one of the biggest movie successes of the decade.

That’s an incredible achievement for any film.

For a biopic? It’s unprecedented.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, Michael follows Jackson’s remarkable journey from his childhood performing alongside his brothers in the Jackson 5 to becoming the world’s biggest entertainer during the late 1980s. The role of Michael is portrayed by Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s real-life nephew, making his feature film debut alongside Colman Domingo and Nia Long as Joe and Katherine Jackson.

And yes… before anyone starts typing in all caps…

The film focuses primarily on Michael’s rise to superstardom rather than attempting to chronicle every controversy that surrounded his later years. That creative direction made the movie accessible to a broader audience and helped introduce Jackson’s music to an entirely new generation of moviegoers.

The results speak for themselves.

The film opened with $97 million domestically, setting a new opening-weekend record for a musical biopic before eventually surpassing films like Bohemian Rhapsody and even becoming one of the highest-grossing movies ever based on a real person. Here at Static Live, we’ve been following this project from the very beginning. Back on February 4, we covered the release of the first trailer and talked about the enormous expectations surrounding the film. Fast forward just six months, and those expectations have been completely shattered. Michael hasn’t merely become another successful music biopic, it has rewritten the record books, proving that Michael Jackson’s appeal remains every bit as powerful today as it was when he first moonwalked across a stage. That’s the kind of legacy very few artists, in any genre, ever achieve.

That’s remarkable.

Then again… we’re talking about Michael Jackson.

His list of accomplishments reads less like a résumé and more like a history book.

Michael Jackson won 13 Grammy Awards, including the coveted Grammy Legend Award and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He collected 26 American Music Awards, more than any male artist in history, earned 39 Guinness World Records, and remains one of the best-selling recording artists of all time, with estimated worldwide sales exceeding 500 million records.

His landmark album Thriller still holds the title as the best-selling album in music history, while songs including “Billie Jean,” “Beat It,” “Thriller,” “Man in the Mirror,” “Black or White,” “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough,” “Bad,” “Smooth Criminal,” “Rock With You,” and “The Way You Make Me Feel” continue to receive millions of streams every month.

His music didn’t simply dominate radio.

It transcended generations, cultures, languages, and borders.

There’s a reason nearly every major pop performer of the last forty years cites Michael Jackson as an influence.

Personally, I’ve always had a soft spot for music biopics.

Whether it’s Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman, Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, Walk the Line, Straight Outta Compton, or so many others, there’s something fascinating about seeing the human story behind the songs we’ve heard our entire lives. Watching artists struggle, fail, fight through adversity, and somehow create timeless music along the way gives those songs an entirely new perspective.

The records become personal.

The lyrics hit differently.

The victories feel earned.

That’s exactly why these films resonate with audiences.

When Michael Jackson passed away in 2009, the world didn’t just lose one of its greatest entertainers.

It lost someone whose artistry permanently changed popular music.

Whether you admired his dancing, his songwriting, his unmistakable voice, or his relentless pursuit of perfection, it’s impossible to deny his place in history.

Today, we simply salute that legacy.

The King of Pop may be gone, but judging by a billion-dollar box office, the world clearly isn’t finished celebrating his music.
