Some collaborations feel obvious in hindsight — like peanut butter and chocolate, vinyl and dust, or arguing with your kids about which Harry Potter movie is the best (it’s Prisoner of Azkaban, don’t email us).
Now add this one to the list: Dame Shirley Bassey officially joining the Harry Potter universe.
Yes, that Shirley Bassey. The voice. The presence. The woman who made James Bond theme songs feel like full-contact emotional experiences.
The Welsh icon has contributed three original songs to Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions, a new immersive audiobook series from Pottermore and Audible. And somehow, this feels both wildly unexpected and completely perfect.
If you’ve ever wondered where J.K. Rowling’s magical pop diva Celestina Warbeck came from — mystery solved. Rowling herself has long said she imagined the character as a wizarding-world version of Shirley Bassey, right down to the dramatic flair and commanding vocals. Decades later, the prophecy has been fulfilled.
A Voice That Belongs in the Great Hall
The first song, “You Stole My Cauldron But You Can’t Have My Heart,” debuts in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, landing December 16. Two more tracks follow in The Half-Blood Prince next year, including “A Cauldron Full of Hot, Strong Love” — which already sounds like it could have gone No. 1 in Diagon Alley.
Bassey recorded her vocals at Miraval Studios in France, while a 17-piece big band was tracked at Abbey Road Studios — because if you’re going to enchant a generation, you may as well do it properly.
Her last studio album, I Owe It All to You (2020), reminded everyone that some voices don’t age — they just gain gravity. Much like the Harry Potter franchise itself, which refuses to loosen its grip on culture, childhoods, and family movie nights.
Full Disclosure: I’m a Harry Potter Nerd
Personal confession from the author:
The original Harry Potter films dropped when my son was seven. The Fantastic Beasts era arrived when my daughter was young. Which means this series has basically been the soundtrack to my parenting career.
So yes — we’ll absolutely be listening to these audiobooks.
Yes — we’re excited about the upcoming HBO series.
And yes — Shirley Bassey showing up to sprinkle a little musical magic on the whole thing feels like a classy mic-drop moment.
A Cast Worthy of the Spell
The new audiobooks feature a stacked voice cast, including Hugh Laurie as Dumbledore, Matthew Macfadyen as Voldemort, Riz Ahmed as Snape, and Michelle Gomez as McGonagall. Add Bassey’s voice to the mix, and suddenly this isn’t just nostalgia — it’s premium wizard content.
Magic evolves. Legends endure. And every once in a while, they collide in a way that just makes sense.
