SoundCloud Just Shocked Everyone and Actually Did Something Good for Artists
We know — that sentence also surprised us.
Streaming platforms aren’t exactly known for “treating artists fairly.”
They are known for… well, the opposite.
But today, SoundCloud pulled the kind of move that makes you want to sit up straighter, squint real hard, and go:
“…wait… are we praising a corporation right now?”
Here’s the big news:
Artists who use SoundCloud’s Artist and Artist Pro subscriptions will now keep 100% of their distribution royalties — not just on SoundCloud, but on the other big platforms too.
That means:
- Spotify
- Apple Music
- YouTube Music
- TikTok …and wherever else your cousin Chad streams your songs when you guilt-trip him.
This removes the usual “platform takes a slice of your soul” revenue share — the one every streamer has normalized because they could.
SoundCloud CEO Eliah Seton called it:
“Distribution without detours, community without barriers, and monetisation without compromise.”
Translation:
“Hey musicians… we finally decided to stop taking your lunch money.”
And yes — that is kind of a big deal.
Why This Matters
Most artists today make less per stream than cryptocurrency meme coins gain in dignity.
(Which is already zero.)
But this — this is a crack in the wall.
A test case.
A “what if the industry didn’t have to be extraction first?” moment.
If this catches on, the next Taylor Swift Eras Tour might not have to power the entire U.S. economy just to keep musicians paid.
Bonus Move: Direct Fan Support
In the U.S., artists can now add a Support Button to their profile so fans can tip them directly.
No label middleman.
No “routing through six platforms.”
No “unlock this support feature for $39.99/mo.”
Just “Hey, I like your music. Here’s $5. Keep going.”
Crowdfunding, but not cringe.
#d0llywood1 says it best: being an independent artist is better with SoundCloud🤝. Finally, you can do it all in one place: receive direct fan support, sell merch, distribute, and keep 100% of your earnings. #blessed https://t.co/aW2DsvX8Pa pic.twitter.com/kpNAeaRVbx

Speaking of Supporting Artists…
If you’re in:
- Ormond Beach
- Daytona
- New Smyrna
- Flagler
- (and yes, more cities coming soon)
You should be using the Static Live Music Calendar App to see who’s playing tonight.
Support local music by actually showing up.
Wild concept — we know.
Download the app.
Be part of your scene.
Don’t let TikTok decide your taste.
