Semisonic: “Closing Time” Is About New Beginnings—Not Deportation Flights

Semisonic just reminded everyone they still exist—by dragging the White House for using their 1998 hit “Closing Time” in a deportation video. The Trump administration, apparently clueless about the song’s meaning, used it in a clip featuring Border Patrol agents sending handcuffed immigrants onto a plane. The band fired back, saying they “did not authorize or condone” its use and that the government “missed the point entirely.” Given that the last time Semisonic was relevant, flip phones were cutting-edge, this could’ve been a rare moment of positive exposure—too bad they had to spend it shutting down political nonsense.
