There are musicals, there are movies that happen to contain songs, and then there’s The Greatest Showman, which apparently decided it wasn’t satisfied with dominating the screen and wanted a second life onstage. Because apparently one enormous theatrical spectacle wasn’t enough.
Disney Theatrical Group has confirmed that the stage adaptation of The Greatest Showman will officially arrive in London’s West End in spring 2027, opening at the historic Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
The production follows a sold-out world premiere run at Bristol Hippodrome earlier this year, giving the musical a pretty convincing test drive before heading into London.
And yes, the big question is whether the stage production can capture the ridiculous amount of energy packed into the 2017 movie. That film had Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Zendaya, Michelle Williams, Keala Settle, circus performers, massive choreography and enough inspirational fireworks to make your inner cynic temporarily malfunction.
From P.T. Barnum to the West End
The story follows P.T. Barnum as he goes from struggling and unemployed to building an entertainment empire centered around performers who were largely pushed to the margins of society.
The real Barnum was certainly a complicated historical figure, but his legacy as a showman who understood the power of spectacle remains enormous. The movie leaned heavily into that larger-than-life mythology, and the stage version appears ready to do the same.
The West End cast will feature Oliver Tompsett as P.T. Barnum and Samantha Barks as Charity Barnum, alongside Ben Joyce, Vajèn van den Bosch and Malinda Parris. More casting is expected to follow.
And if you’re wondering whether they’re going to mess with the songs that made the movie such a phenomenon, relax. Nobody has apparently lost their mind.
The production will feature favorites including “The Greatest Show,” “A Million Dreams,” “Come Alive,” “Rewrite the Stars,” “Never Enough” and “This Is Me.”
There will also be new music written specifically for the stage adaptation, with original songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul returning to handle the score.
The Movie Had Some Serious Musical Firepower
The original Greatest Showman soundtrack wasn’t merely successful. It absolutely bulldozed its way through the charts.
The soundtrack reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, spending two weeks at the top in 2018. It eventually became one of the biggest movie soundtracks of the modern era.
Then there was “This Is Me,” performed by Keala Settle, which won the 2018 Golden Globe for Best Original Song and became an anthem far beyond the movie itself.
That’s a pretty serious legacy for a soundtrack that could have easily been dismissed as another Hollywood musical cash grab.
Instead, people actually listened to the thing. Repeatedly. In cars. At weddings. At karaoke nights where someone inevitably discovers that they cannot, in fact, sing like Keala Settle.
And What About Broadway?
This is where things get interesting.
The West End announcement doesn’t guarantee a Broadway production, but considering the film’s enormous popularity and the pedigree behind the stage adaptation, it would be difficult not to imagine American audiences eventually getting their turn.
And honestly, The Greatest Showman feels almost tailor-made for Broadway.
It’s colorful, loud, emotional, ridiculously ambitious and completely unapologetic about wanting you to feel something. In an entertainment world increasingly obsessed with intellectual properties and cinematic universes, there’s something refreshing about a musical that simply says, “We’re putting on a massive damn show.”
That is, after all, the point.
For those of us who have watched the movie approximately seventeen times and still get caught singing along to “Rewrite the Stars,” this is potentially very good news.
Now we’re just waiting for someone to bring the circus across the Atlantic.
