Prove Springfield Still Rules Pop Culture
There are television shows.
There are legendary television shows.
And then there’s The Simpsons.
At this point, America has produced a lot of iconic families over the years, but none are more recognizable than Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie Simpson. The yellow family from Springfield has become such a permanent fixture of popular culture that some people reading this article are literally younger than the show itself.
Seriously.
The Simpsons first appeared in 1989.
Some of you weren’t even a thought yet.
Yet somehow, nearly four decades later, the show continues to evolve, adapt, and find new ways to entertain audiences.
This summer, Disney+ is giving fans three brand-new original episodes, proving that Springfield still has plenty of stories left to tell.
Disney+ Expands The Simpsons Universe
Disney+ announced three exclusive new episodes arriving throughout the summer:
June 17
Extreme Makeover: Homer Edition
This special double-length episode follows Homer and Marge after a date night goes sideways when Marge discovers Homer left the kids under the watchful eye of nothing more than a doorbell camera.
Because apparently parenting by surveillance technology is now considered a valid strategy.
The episode features guest appearances from:
- Betty Gilpin
- Laufey
- Tegan and Sara
July 3
Simpsley
A noir-inspired story that transports Marge Bouvier to Italy where she attempts to convince Seymour Skinner to return home while navigating wealth, deception, and one particularly problematic version of Homer.
August 26
Yellow Mirror
Possibly the most intriguing of the three episodes, “Yellow Mirror” parodies the technology-driven themes made famous by Black Mirror.
The episode explores:
- artificial intelligence
- digital relationships
- reality distortion
- technology’s influence on family life
Which sounds suspiciously close to real life these days.
800 Episodes and Counting
The Simpsons recently reached an astonishing milestone:
👉 800 episodes.
Let that sink in.
Most television shows struggle to survive three seasons.
Some don’t survive three episodes.
Meanwhile The Simpsons has reached a point where it could probably qualify for social security.
Fox recently renewed the series through Season 40, ensuring Springfield remains on television well into the future.
The Awards Are Almost Too Numerous to Count
The Simpsons isn’t simply one of the longest-running television series ever created.
It’s also one of the most decorated.
Over its incredible run, the series has earned:
- More than 35 Emmy Awards
- Multiple Peabody Awards
- Annie Awards
- Environmental Media Awards
- A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
The show has influenced nearly every animated comedy that followed.
Without The Simpsons, it’s difficult to imagine:
- Family Guy
- South Park
- Futurama
- Bob’s Burgers
- Rick and Morty
The entire landscape of animated television looks different without Matt Groening’s creation.
The Creative Minds Behind Springfield
Credit belongs to creator Matt Groening, along with legendary producers and developers:
- James L. Brooks
- Sam Simon
Together, they created what many consider the most successful animated television franchise in history.
Their influence reaches far beyond television.
The Simpsons helped redefine:
- satire
- family comedy
- social commentary
- animation for adults
Not bad for a cartoon that originally appeared as short sketches between segments on The Tracey Ullman Show.
The Simpsons Prediction Phenomenon
Of course, no discussion about The Simpsons would be complete without mentioning one of the internet’s favorite rabbit holes:
👉 The Simpsons predicting the future.
Over the years, fans have pointed to episodes that appeared to foreshadow events involving:
- smart watches
- video calling
- Disney purchasing Fox
- political elections
- advanced technology
Some of these examples are coincidence.
Some are clever satire that happened to age well.
And some are just weird enough to make you raise an eyebrow.
Either way, the mythology surrounding these predictions has become part of the show’s legacy.
Why The Simpsons Still Matter
The secret to The Simpsons’ longevity isn’t animation.
It isn’t celebrity guest stars.
It isn’t nostalgia.
The real reason the show survives is because it continues to reflect society’s absurdities back at us.
Technology changes.
Politics change.
Music changes.
The Simpsons finds a way to poke fun at all of it.
And somehow remains relevant in the process.
That isn’t easy.
Pop Culture Is Alive and Well
With Disney+ continuing to invest in exclusive Simpsons content, it is clear that Springfield remains one of entertainment’s most valuable destinations.
Forty seasons.
Hundreds of guest stars.
Countless awards.
Millions of fans.
Not bad for a family whose primary source of income appears to come from a man who regularly gets fired from a nuclear power plant.
