Proving Some Voices Never Lose Their Magic
There are artists who constantly release new music, and then there are artists who disappear for years, only to return with something that reminds you exactly why you fell in love with their work in the first place.
Fiona Apple has always belonged to the second group.
I’ll admit it. Back when MTV actually played music videos and “Criminal” seemed to be on every hour, I had a massive crush on Fiona Apple. She had this mysterious confidence, an unmistakable voice, and somehow managed to be both vulnerable and fearless at the same time. Between the haunting piano, the unforgettable video, and her raw songwriting, it wasn’t difficult to understand why she became one of the most talked-about artists of the late ’90s.
Fast forward nearly three decades, and she’s still making music entirely on her own terms.
Fiona has released “Horns of a Bull,” a brand-new song written as the theme for Apple TV+’s upcoming limited series Lucky. Clocking in at just under two minutes, the track blends warm piano chords, loose percussion, and her unmistakable conversational vocal style before building into one of the emotionally charged performances fans have come to expect.
It’s unmistakably Fiona.
The series itself adapts Marissa Stapley’s bestselling 2021 novel Lucky, following an international con artist played by Anya Taylor-Joy as she attempts to outrun FBI agents and a dangerous crime boss after a multimillion-dollar heist goes sideways. Fiona co-produced the song alongside drummer Amy Aileen Wood, whose husband, Cassie Pappas, serves as the show’s creator.
The result feels less like a television theme song and more like another chapter in Fiona Apple’s evolving musical story.
And that’s saying something.
Throughout her career, Fiona Apple has earned three Grammy Awards, including Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for “Criminal” and later Best Alternative Music Album for her critically acclaimed masterpiece Fetch the Bolt Cutters. She’s also received multiple MTV Video Music Award nominations, MTV accolades, and endless praise from critics who consistently rank her among the finest songwriters of her generation.
Her catalog isn’t built around chasing chart trends.
It’s built around honesty.
Songs like “Criminal,” “Shadowboxer,” “Fast As You Can,” “Paper Bag,” “Extraordinary Machine,” and “Every Single Night” continue to resonate because they refuse to sound like anyone else.
That’s become Fiona Apple’s greatest strength.
While many artists spend careers trying to reinvent themselves every album, Fiona simply writes music that sounds unmistakably like… Fiona Apple.
Her newest release continues that tradition.
Fans hoping for another massive pop anthem may be surprised, but listeners familiar with Fetch the Bolt Cutters will immediately recognize the organic, stripped-down production and emotionally fearless songwriting that made that album one of the most celebrated releases of the decade. In fact, numerous critics ranked Fetch the Bolt Cutters among the greatest albums of the 2020s, and it remains one of the defining records of modern alternative music.
Since then, Fiona has quietly continued releasing meaningful work. She contributed the benefit single “Pretrial (Let Her Go Home),” recorded a haunting version of Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold,” collaborated with The Waterboys, and even surprised listeners by co-writing the electro-pop track “Need It” for Cara Delevingne.
She’s clearly been busy.
Just… in Fiona Apple time.
Which tends to operate on a completely different calendar than the rest of the music industry.
In a recent social media video, Fiona explained why another full-length album has taken so long. She admitted she’s been deeply affected by the world around her and wants to ensure the music she creates genuinely reflects what she’s trying to say, rather than simply rushing something into existence.
Honestly?
That’s refreshing.
In an era where algorithms reward quantity over quality and artists are often expected to release something new every few weeks to satisfy the internet’s microscopic attention span, Fiona Apple continues doing exactly what she’s always done.
She waits until she has something worth saying.
And somehow… that’s become rebellious.
Whether Horns of a Bull eventually leads toward another full-length album remains to be seen, but for longtime fans, even a two-minute reminder that Fiona Apple is still creating feels like good news.
Some voices simply don’t fade.
Some songs never lose their power.
And some old crushes… apparently don’t either.
