Proving Country Music’s Biggest Lightning Rod Isn’t Slowing Down
Love him or hate him, there’s one thing you can’t honestly say about Morgan Wallen.
He’s boring.
Over the last several years, Wallen has become one of country music’s biggest stars while simultaneously becoming one of its biggest headlines. Sometimes those headlines celebrate another chart record. Other times… well… they involve a chair flying off the roof of a Nashville bar, a last-minute exit from Saturday Night Live, or comments that sparked nationwide controversy.
Morgan Wallen has managed to become the guy everyone seems to have an opinion about.
And somehow, through all of it, the music keeps winning.
This week, Wallen surprised fans attending his Still the Problem Tour stop at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore by debuting a brand-new song titled “Been By Now.” Before the night was over, he confirmed the track will officially arrive on July 24, giving fans another preview of what’s become one of the hottest catalogs in modern country music.
The emotional mid-tempo ballad explores a relationship struggling to move forward, with Wallen reflecting that if two people were truly meant for one another, “we’d have been by now.”
If you’ve followed his songwriting over the years, that emotional honesty has become one of his trademarks.
The performance itself generated plenty of buzz, but Wallen’s entrance might have stolen the show.
Walking onto the field beside him was none other than Ray Lewis, arguably one of the greatest linebackers in NFL history and a proud University of Miami Hurricane. Lewis, a two-time Super Bowl champion, Super Bowl XXXV MVP, 13-time Pro Bowler, and Pro Football Hall of Fame member, remains one of football’s most iconic personalities.
He’s also no stranger to media attention himself.
Seeing two larger-than-life figures, each with remarkable careers and no shortage of headlines over the years, walking into Baltimore’s stadium together certainly made for one unforgettable entrance.
As a longtime Miami Hurricanes fan, seeing Ray Lewis stride out in front of his hometown crowd was worth the price of admission all by itself.
Then Morgan took over.
From a career standpoint, few artists are matching Wallen’s momentum.
His blockbuster album I’m the Problem spent 13 weeks atop the Billboard 200, while continuing to dominate the country charts. In fact, Wallen now holds the record for the most weeks at No. 1 in the history of Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart, an astonishing achievement considering the chart has existed for more than six decades.
Not bad for a guy who’s constantly being told his career is supposedly over.
His résumé keeps growing as well.
Morgan Wallen has won Billboard Music Awards, Academy of Country Music Awards, Country Music Association Awards, and has produced massive hits including “Last Night,” “You Proof,” “Whiskey Glasses,” “Sand in My Boots,” “Wasted on You,” “Thought You Should Know,” “Cowgirls,” and “Love Somebody.” His crossover appeal has helped introduce country music to an entirely new audience, making him one of the biggest-selling artists of the streaming era.
Of course, Morgan’s career hasn’t been without turbulence.
In 2021, he faced widespread criticism after being caught using a racial slur on video, an incident that resulted in radio stations temporarily pulling his music and industry organizations suspending support. More recently, he found himself back in headlines after allegedly throwing a chair from the rooftop of a Nashville establishment, creating another round of national media coverage.
Then there was the curious Saturday Night Live moment that had the internet spinning with theories after Wallen made an unusually quick exit from the stage at the conclusion of the show.
If Morgan Wallen has learned anything, it’s probably that the internet never sleeps.
Neither do headline writers.
Yet through every controversy, every debate, and every social media firestorm, fans continue showing up in enormous numbers.
That’s because, for many listeners, the music continues speaking louder than everything else.
Whether “Been By Now” becomes another chart-topping hit remains to be seen, but judging by the reaction in Baltimore, fans are more than ready to hear what’s next.
One thing seems certain.
Morgan Wallen has never taken the easy road.
