And Honestly, Nobody Deserves It More
Every once in a while, a band quietly becomes one of the biggest acts on the planet while half the world is still arguing over who’s trending on TikTok.
That’s pretty much the story of RÜFÜS DU SOL.
Without chasing headlines or relying on manufactured controversy, the Australian trio has built one of the most devoted fan bases in modern electronic music. This week, they’re adding another incredible chapter to that story by becoming the first electronic act ever to sell out four consecutive nights at Madison Square Garden, setting a new benchmark for dance music inside one of the most legendary arenas on Earth.
If that doesn’t earn your respect, I’m not entirely sure what will.
RÜFÜS DU SOL’s remarkable run at Madison Square Garden comes as part of their record-breaking Inhale / Exhale World Tour, a tour that has already been recognized as the highest-selling electronic music tour in history. The numbers are staggering. More than 1.5 million fans have attended performances around the globe, they’ve sold over 750,000 headline tickets in a single year, and they’ve become only the second Australian act after AC/DC to headline the legendary Rose Bowl in Los Angeles. Not bad for three guys from Sydney who simply kept making beautiful music while everyone else was busy chasing the next viral trend.
For longtime fans, none of this feels surprising.
Personally, RÜFÜS DU SOL has become one of those bands I return to over and over again. Their music somehow works for almost every situation imaginable. It’s the soundtrack for late-night work sessions when deadlines refuse to cooperate. It’s perfect background music for a backyard gathering with friends. It’s equally at home floating through the speakers while you’re drifting around a swimming pool on a hot Florida afternoon wondering why Mondays insist on arriving every seven days.
Electronic music often gets dismissed as repetitive noise by people who’ve never really listened to it.
Those people clearly haven’t spent an evening with RÜFÜS DU SOL.
Songs like “Alive,” “Innerbloom,” “Next to Me,” “Treat You Better,” and “On My Knees” aren’t just dance tracks. They’re emotional experiences wrapped inside shimmering synths, soaring vocals, and production so clean it almost feels cinematic. Their 2021 single “Alive” earned the group their first Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Recording, while the trio has collected four ARIA Awards and multiple Grammy nominations throughout an already remarkable career.
If you’ve never watched their legendary “Live From Joshua Tree” performance on YouTube, stop whatever you’re doing after you finish this article and fix that immediately.
Seriously.
I’ll be embedding that performance right here because, in my opinion, it’s one of the finest live electronic performances ever recorded. The desert backdrop, the sunset, the atmosphere, and the flawless musicianship come together to create something that feels less like a concert and more like a spiritual experience. It’s the kind of video that reminds you electronic music isn’t just about giant festivals and flashing lights. Sometimes it’s simply about creating a mood that stays with you long after the final note fades away.
While RÜFÜS DU SOL sits near the top of my electronic music playlist, they’re certainly not alone. Artists like Elderbrook, Bob Moses, and Roosevelt have also mastered the art of making electronic music feel deeply human. Their songs don’t demand your attention. They earn it. Whether you’re working, driving, relaxing, or simply trying to escape the noise of everyday life for a little while, these artists seem to understand that sometimes music doesn’t have to shout to make an impact.
As the trio prepares to headline more iconic venues, including Mexico City’s Foro Sol and legendary ballparks like Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, and Petco Park, it’s becoming increasingly clear that electronic music has fully arrived alongside rock, country, and pop as one of the world’s dominant live genres.
The old stereotype that DJs and electronic artists couldn’t fill arenas has officially gone the way of dial-up internet.
Madison Square Garden just made that crystal clear.
Congratulations to Tyrone Lindqvist, Jon George, and James Hunt on an incredible achievement. Four sold-out nights at Madison Square Garden is something very few artists of any genre will ever accomplish.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go put on Innerbloom for what is probably the thousandth time.
And yes… I’m still hoping new music is on the horizon.
